Since it makes sense to document my fueling and experience at IMWI 2006, now is as as good a time as any. I'll start with the day(s) leading up to the race.....

I prepared my equipment (bike, nutritional stuff, etc.) on Thursday night and had it all set for an early departure on Friday. Woke up at 4:15 (from the strangest dream, I might add) and made some coffee for the 2+ hour drive up to Madison. Got up there around 7:00 AM, parked in the terrace and walk around for a spell. Kinda cool thing - I stumbled upon Paula Newby-Fraser (7 time professional IM champion) giving a strategy talk about the race to a group of racers. Two important things stuck with me from that session: 1) stay in the moment (more to come on this point later) and 2) everyone feels the pain - pros, amateurs, DNFers - everyone, so.....just deal with it and push on. Both thoughts would become rallying points for both me and Marc during the race.

I forgot to mention that the reason for the early arrival was to participate in the Gatorade swim taking place Friday morning. I met Marc, Mike and Rick down there and together we did one lap around the swim course. Fortunately, Blue Seven, a wetsuite company, was demo-ing wetsuits for the race. I used their top-of-line suit for my 'last swim' before IM and ended up liking it so much I bought it for the race. After the 2000 M swim/workout, we went through registration (which took about 1 1/2 hours) and drove over to the hotel to register only to learn that we couldn't check in until 3 PM. Instead, we went and found a nice Italian cafe, met the whole crew (Burt Zak showed up as well) and sat outside (in the gorgeous weather) for lunch. After lunch we finally checked into the hotel and began preparing for the race. Marc had to go to Lake Geneva to pickup his Son so I took a haircut (as Jason would say), went back to Madison to sit in on the course talk and went out for a light dinner by myself before turning in for the night.

Opening Blog

Well, don't expect too much here - while I have no problem sharing my point of view with others, for now I choose to keep it low key.
